Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way eBook Cal Ripken Jr Bill Ripken Scott Lowe Reviews

  • This is a very nice book that can help parents, new coaches and even many that call themselves coaches, but all they do is throw pitches and hit balls to players. I played for over 35 years and now becoming recreational coach. The first part of the book helps you understand your duty as a coach and be a better communicator to avoid future misunderstandings with parents, children, umpires, etc. The second part a large number of drills and fun games that will certainly keep children engaged. In my baseball experience I never did most of them, but I can see that this book will help me succeed as a coach. I strongly recommend Parents, every coach or wanna be coach to read this. I have helped coaches for the last 4 or 5 years, and I can tell you neither one of them read this book. I can understand why my kids don't love the game as much as I do. The reward you get after reading it completely justify the few bucks you spent. I am a parent as many of you reading this. I have a full time job, and as many of you sometimes I don't want to drag everything and drive to the field to play a bit of baseball with the kid(s). There is many things you can try and do in your own backyard after reading this book. Parents, give it a try with your young children. They will have fun and may like the sport. Now, I know my kids will have a second chance, but primarily it will be their decision, I will just show them the way as well as my new pupils. Something I learned while reading. I can't forced them to be what I wanted for me.
  • I have coached baseball from tee ball to high school varsity, and this book is by far the most comprehensive, easy-to-read, practical book on coaching baseball that I have seen. The drills and organization tools make practice planning simple. The Ripken Way emphasizes FUN and keeping kids engaged in a game that requires a lot of patience and attention. The drills are broken down by age-appropriateness in a way that makes this book useful for coaches of all levels.
  • Very well written book on coaching baseball for all ages. I read this book to get more informed on how to coach 5-6 year old T-Ball. This book provided a very good framework for this age group. Many well timed photographs used to describe practice drills.

    Favorite parts of the book

As coaches, we need to be able to cater to the needs of the kid who can't catch one ball and still make baseball fun and exciting for the kid who can. It's a difficult balance but one that's important to understand at all levels.
  • If you are looking for a way to ensure you are teaching the correct skills and at the same time making baseball practice lively, this is the book. The Ripkens are, obviously, well qualified to talk about baseball, but I was surprised at the wisdom, perspective, and pace of the book. First things, as they say, first. This is not a book that you get if you want to be a crazy baseball dad or mom -- this is the book you get if you want to be able to teach and explain the workings of baseball in an interesting way. Can't recommend this book highly enough.
I was in something of a rush and bought this book on the (which I love). Since it is a reference work, however, in retrospect the hard copy might have made more sense. I do a lot of flipping back and forth in the kindle, and bookmarks are okay, but right yet I don't think the software is nearly as efficient. Still, no gripes or regrets about this purchase -- I might just have to buy the hard copy as well.
  • We think anyone who coaches young baseball players should read and use this book. One of Cal and Bill Ripken's biggest goals is to get young players to LOVE THE GAME and have fun! We originally picked this book because it is written by the Ripkens (and we think Cal Ripken is one of the best ballplayers of all time!)

The book is not just a list of drills but they also take time to discuss coaching responsibilities and philosophies and reasonable expectations. They include great ideas for practices and how to run games at the younger levels - we wish this book was required reading for ALL volunteer youth baseball coaches. Drills included are several for Hitting and Baserunning, Throwing and Pitching, and Fielding.

The best part of the book is the Practice Planner, where they go over Practice Particulars for each age group (4-6, 7-9, 10-12, etc.) They also tell you what skills you should be teaching kids at what age level. I was amazed at the "basics" that my 8 year old son hasn't learned yet. The Ripkens want kids to learn and have fun doing it so they love the game.

We found ourselves agreeing with everything the Ripkens had to say and we will be using the rest of the spring/summer to "backyard coach" our 5 year old, 8 year old and 10 year old daughter now that baseball is over for the year - keeping it fun, of course! We would love for our children to go to one of the Ripkens' baseball camps, but this book will have to suffice.

Pirate Hunters Treasure Obsession and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship Audible Audio Edition Robert Kurson Ray Porter Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • This book is engaging, but it's no "Shadow Divers". For one thing, there's not much plot and the author had to sort of create a narrative and stick in bits of Pirate history to glue it all together. Then the two primary personalities come off pretty badly. One is portrayed as crazy-violent, the other as an obsessed ego-maniac. I guess it's all meant to paint a picture, but it's a little too much personal information for me. The book also ends abruptly, with 97% devoted to a fruitless search and 3% a quick summary of what they found.

So although I enjoyed reading it, and made it through to the end. It will not be a keeper and is headed to a used book store shortly.

BTW, if you have not read "Shadow Divers", for Pete's Sake go get a copy now! Now that was an extraordinary tale.
  • I read this book after having read Shadow Divers because I enjoy Robert Kurson's writing. This is an easy to read historical account and quiet interesting. However, not nearly as compelling ash Shadow Divers. There is a lot of back story on the main characters; however, the accounting of the actual discovery of the sunken pirate vessel seems almost an afterthought in places. I would have appreciated more about the actual salvage and what they found. The book sort gets to the find, and states "and then they salvaged.. the end" .

In contrast, the background on pirate history was extremely fascinating and caused me to research piracy a bit more and read additional accounts of the 17th century pirates. Overall worth your time, but not as good as Shadow Divers.
  • I don't read a lot of nonfiction and when I do I want it to read as smoothly as fiction. This pretty much fit the bill, with an exciting account of seasoned treasure hunters / divers finding a wreck of a fairly obscure merchant-captain-turned-pirate, Joseph Bannister. The author went off on a multitude of tangents including in depth studies of the lives of the men searching for the ship (which were interesting but not terribly relevant), and I'd say the actual story focusing on the tactical search for the wreck only constituted about half the book. Also, without spoiling the ending, the main characters fly all over the place at great expense doing a ton of primary research, and then the biggest piece of the puzzle ends up being in a newly published book that you can buy on - that element had a feel of deus ex machina about it. But overall it was an enjoyable and quick read, and I did learn something about Bannister, the treasure hunting "business," and the dangerous techniques used in underwater recovery efforts. Would recommend.
  • I have enjoyed the collaboration between Kurson, Chatterton, Kohler and now Mattera. Shadow Divers is one on my favorite books. Now this one Pirate Hunters is another. I have two hobbies, diving and treasure hunting, and this second book encompasses both. It is amazing the product that can be created when professionals get together. I nearly finished this book in 2 days. I could not stop reading it. That would have been a record for me.
  • It was the title of this book that first captured my attention. The fact that the book is based on a true story made it even better! The quest for the Golden Fleece really comes to life in the book. The life of a pirate is described to the point of being able to picture the images in your mind’s eye. The sheer terror of running abreast of a pirate ship and crew causes your heart to beat faster. Clearly, this was not the career for the faint of heart! Sometimes, though, it was a career of necessity. The financial and emotional toll of the men and their families who searched for the Golden Fleece is clearly detailed. This book is about so much more than finding a ship or the treasure sometimes worth millions on it. It’s about doing those things that though you think might be impossible, drive you to the point of knowing who you really are and what you really value. You can’t put a price tag on that!
  • I love a fast-paced adventure novel, filled with treasure hunters, deep sea divers and an anti-heroic pirate captain. And to find such a story, which also happens to be true....now that's a real treasure!

This is the first time I have read Robert Kurson's writing, but I really am impressed by the way he takes a true story and writes non fiction as though it's an exciting adventure tale that just flies by. However, he could not have done this without some fascinating subject matter provided by deep sea divers and treasure hunters John Chatterton and John Mattera.

The basis of this story is how Chatterton and Mattera have been commissioned to find the Golden Fleece, a ship captained by the pirate John Bannister. However, not only does Kurson's tale take us from the Dominican Republic to Europe to the States and back again, he also takes us into both the distant and more recent past as we delve into the lives not only of the infamous Bannister but also of Chatterton and Mattera. Pirates, mafia crime rings, German U-boats, battles against cancer and even diving experiences in the shadow of the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001...it's all here in a fast-paced , well-researched piece of non-fiction, that reads like a combination adventure - historical fiction - detective novel.
  • Robert Kurson is a writer you can’t put down. It was an amazing story about two treasure “finders,” who follow their instincts and come up with a bounty. I’m now excited about reading more books on piracy. His writing style is quick, compelling you to the end.
  • I really enjoyed this book . I felt like I was there too. I loved that pics at the end of the book . I’ve always thought it would be a great adventure to hunt for stuff in the ocean . You made a 73 yr. old ladies dream come true. It was really great. Thanks fellas for a chance at hunting the prize !! Mildred Dawson .

Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod Audible Audio Edition Gary Paulsen Danny Campbell Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • This might be the funniest book I've ever read; Paulson takes us through his education as a clueless Iditarod racer, describing the mishaps he experiences throughout his training, and during the race. His dry wit as he described mishap after mishap caused me to shake with laughter as I tried to contain myself on the New York City subway; I had to put the book down several times so that I could "regroup" before the next bout of laughter. His saintly wife acts as his "straight man" as she endures his debacles at the hands of his dogs and whatever nature could throw at him.

What also comes across though is the bond he forges with his dogs, especially Cookie, who seems to have a deep understand of Paulson, as well as what is expected of her as he trains; he describes her—and the bond he has with her—with great tenderness and devotion as they come to rely on each other during the course of the book.

Whether you love books about animals, books that make you laugh, books about the Iditarod... I would highly recommend this book. I've read a lot of books, and this is one of the best I've ever read.
  • This is one of the better books I've ever read! The premise is Paulsen preparing for then running the Iditarod, a 1000+ mile dog-sled race across Alaska. His misadventures are hilarious - getting dragged for miles by out-of-control dogs, getting blasted by skunks in the middle of the night, getting his clothing and more shredded by his cantankerous sled-dog "Devil", but the hilarity supplements the larger tale of his growing love of his dogs, and ultimately nature.

It's a pretty quick read with funny anecdotes of events during the Iditarod, but it gives normal people a feeling for just how dedicated and hardy (fool hardy?) mushers are. This is a great book for teens and up.

If you've made it this far, please check the box that this review was helpful. Thanks!
  • Winterdance by Gary Paulsen, the best-selling, award-winning author of young reader books, is a fascinating biography of his first Iditarod. He describes the preparation, the fund raising, the dangers, building a relationship with the dogs, and every possible aspect of the experience. The book is educational, spell-binding, and even shocking. If you've ever wondered about this race and what kind of person is driven to participate in it, this book is for you.
  • This book, a true story about an inexperienced newcomer running the Iditerod for the first time, will make you laugh, make you think, raise goosebumps on your arms, and give you a whole new perspective on dogs. And no, you do not have to be a dog lover to love this book. It has been around a while. Years ago, I recommended it to our book club, many of whom ended up buying more copies for Christmas gifts. My dad liked it so much, he read it to his grandchildren (removing the occasional cuss word). It's an amazing race that happens every year in Alaska that doesn't get much notice. When you read what these racers have to overcome to run this race, you understand that they're a breed apart. I love this book. I don't know anybody who I've recommended it to that didn't love it as well.
  • Don't read this book in public -- because you'll be laughing too hard to be in company. Great fun, great grit. Paulsen is about as crazy as his dogs, but this is compulsively interesting. A book for older teens and adults (nothing nasty in it, but it's nothing to recommend to his younger readers -- let them discover it on their own some day).
  • There is a natural rhythm in Gary Paulsen's writing.... he takes youi from high danger to laughter in no time, at the same time he is making fictional story telling out of real life experiences, and making fiction seem intensely real. I have recommended his writing to two other and they have enjoyed it completely and recommended to still others.
  • This is one of my favorite books of all time. Suitable for adults, young adults and reluctant readers.
It's a great story filled with beautiful descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness. Paulsen's sense of humor makes me smile and laugh out loud at many points throughout the book. I have read this book 5 or 6 times. It's like visiting an old friend every time I read it.
  • This was one of my favorite books as a kid, so I thought I would reread it. It was just as gripping and compelling as it was when I was a kid. I read it in a few hours because I couldn't put It down.
