I can sympathize with the reviewer who had a concern with moral issues. I prefer to flee such dilemmas. Still, life can be badly complicated. Issues that make for an exciting read are not something to experience personally.
I demand pay to leave a review for the book! The plot is a worthy one and rivals the most complex
soap opera plots that I can remember from the previous millennium (by the calendar)! At least
everybody (Caroline and Moses, Lavinia and Sebastian) got matched up with their true loves.
Hopefully, the children have a simpler time of romance. But if they do, where is the fun in that! I
wonder if anyone would actually want to live through such a story! Anyway, it definitely makes a
exciting read!"

- Okay... At the beginning of the story I became annoyed and agitated at the lead female character, Caroline, the governess. She is too sweet, too subservient and seemed like she had no spine at all. She is extremely intelligent, talented and capable of caring for her charges, Josephine and Nicholas. Also, Moses, the Duke of Barley, his wife Lavinia is portrayed too vile. Her hatred toward Caroline really resonated through the writing. However, by the time I got to the end, I feel Lavinia was undoubtedly cased under too harsh of a light. The story does take an unusual twist in the middle that raises the question of infidelity. Emotional infidelity. Then there is another turn where Caroline is being stalked by her past. This part of the story is fascinating. The subterfuge, the arrogance, the insolence that Lavinia's father displays comes across very well. Caroline's uncle I think was supposed to be the main villain, but I found Lavinia's father worse. Like I said, after about a third of the way in, I thought "about time the story gets a move on". The writing really improved after an abysmal beginning. I liked the story that was unfolding. The drawback was the way Lavinia's character was written towards the end. It kind of like did not make sense what she ended up doing. I mean I understand what she did and why she did it. But it seemed to come out of left field. There is one little hint about three fourths the way in but the reveal was too shocking. It feels like the reveal was thrown in for dramatic good measure a way to start tying the loose ends together. I am a little disappointed but overall the story was a good idea and had merit. I give it a 3.5 but will round up to 4 because the second half of the book was quite exciting. I did enjoy reading the extended epilogue but wonder why it was separate from the book.
- Although this author is known for her clean and sweet stand-alone Regency novels, I must say I was surprised by the content of The Secret Life of an Elusive Governess. Yes, this book is free of bedroom intimacy, however it is not free of immoral issues. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed in this latest offering from Hanna Hamilton.
As with prior books, this plot includes an element of danger with the romance, but it was the inappropriate choices of hero/heroine that put me off. Granted, the issue of being emotionally unfaithful to your spouse may not resonate with anyone else, but for me it is fundamentally wrong.
All in all, this is a well-written romance with a good story and a happy ending. Additionally, Ms. Hamilton has included both an epilogue and an extended epilogue.

exciting read! - Moses Hayward, the Duke of Barley has a wife and two children. He also has a marriage of convenience. They do not love each other. She has been sickly for a long time but lately has been getting better. Miss Caroline Robins has been looking for a governess job, she has left the orphanage that she grew up in. The duke has chosen to try her out and two years later she is still there. She loves Lord Nicholas and Lady Josephine, they are wonderful pupils. Caroline has some secrets and will not speak of them but nobody knows.
I love this story, there was so many emotions, deceit, betrayal, and lying. The characters were engaging and had depth. For the duke, his children, Caroline, and his wife were the most important things in his life and he took it seriously. I thought the plot to be well thought out, it was exciting, scary, very emotional and the love that was there between the four of them was surprising. There are some interesting surprises. I found I had read the book in one sitting, it was just too good to put down. I am so looking forward to reading the next one. - Moses Hayward, Duke of Barley, hires a young governess to teach his son and daughter. His wife, Lavinia, doesn't interact much with the children because she had been ill much of their lives and becomes jealous of Caroline the new governess.
Caroline Robins had been raised and taught by nuns to become a governess after being found outside of a church ⛪and she hid her identity because her life was endangered. She had seen her father, Baron of Rowe, murdered and was seen as she was leaving the room where the crime scene occurred.
The Earl of Crampton, father of Lavinia, has his own agenda to get rid of Caroline and hires a man to discover more about her. He thus learns about her uncle Albion, Baron of Rowe, and notifies him about Caroline's whereabouts.
Moses had never been happy in his marriage to Lavinia, but he always honored his vows to her, even after falling in love 💘 with Caroline. When Caroline is accosted and her life is threatened, he removes her from his home to a safe place in order to investigate the matter. When his daughter is kidnapped and the ransom note mentions a trade for Caroline within 24 hours, he and his wife wonder how that can be possible when it had taken him 3 days to get Caroline to a safe place.
Several surprises await and a definite HEA, heartwarming ending. I enjoyed reading the 📚.
